Hermanus Whale Route Tour From Cape Town

Hermanus Whale Route Tour

Enjoy a scenic coastal drive and experience the majestic beauty of the Southern Right whales basking in the warm waters off the Hermanus coastline.

Sesonal: June -November

Highlights

Witness the majestic Southern Right whales that come to the Cape each season to breed and calve. Whale season typically runs between June and November in the Cape, and each season, large numbers of whales can be seen along the coast.

The best place to see these creatures is along the famous Whale Route, which spans along the coastline passing Gordon’s Bay, Pringle Bay and Betty’s Bay en route to Hermanus. As one of the top destinations for whale watching, Hermanus is perfectly positioned to offer the best viewing directly from the shore. You will be able to watch as these giants of the deep frolic in the waves and launch out of the water to breach.

Other highlights that you will enjoy on this Cape Town tour include a visit to the beautiful Fernkloof Nature Reserve, which spans 2000 hectares of montane and coastal fynbos as well as a huge number of birds and smaller mammals. The Harold Porter Botanical Gardens is another highlight for nature-lovers.

The drive along Clarence Drive through the sleepy coastal towns of the Whale Route offers spectacular views of the Cape coastline, and in your comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle you will be able to relax and enjoy the sights on this memorable Cape Whale watching tour.

Trip Itinerary

Shuttle Pickup
Your friendly Guide will collect you from your front door within 10km of the city centre. Our route takes us towards Gordon’s Bay along the N2.
Clarence Drive
Clarence Drive is a magnificent scenic coastal drive between the windswept hamlet of Rooi-Els and the naval town of Gordons Bay, which nestles in the north-eastern crook of False Bay in the shadow of the Hottentots Hollands mountains. This beautiful, coastal drive stretches between the two towns over 21 km, hugging the wild turquoise Cape coastline all the way.
Stoney Point
Located in the quaint coastal town of Betty’s Bay in the Overberg, the Stony Point Nature Reserve is home to a unique colony of African Penguins. Stony Point offers the public the chance to see these wonderful flightless birds up close, via the boardwalk through the colony, which allows the public to observe the penguins go about their daily activities in their natural habitat, without disturbing or disrupting them.
Harold Porter Botanical Garden
This lovely garden is situated in the centre of the coastal fynbos where the flora is at its richest. It encompasses mountain slopes with wind-clipped heathlands, deep gorges with relict forests, flats and marshes with restios, sedges and bulbs, as well as dunes adjacent to the beach with specialised salt-adapted plants. The Garden is renowned for its waterfalls and amber pools.
Hermanus Cliff Path
The cliff path at Hermanus is one of the town’s most beautiful features. It meanders for 11 km along the rugged coastline, between the New Harbour to the west, and Piet-se-Bos, just beyond Grotto Beach, to the east. It is on the Hermanus cliff path that some of the world’s best land-based whale watching occurs (from August/September).
Optional Boat Tour
Experience an up close and personal encounter with the ‘gentle giants’ of the ocean that promises to be an ‘experience to be treasured’ on this optional 2 hour trip into Walker Bay
Return To Cape Town
After a full day we return to Cape Town via the Elgin Valley and Sir Lowery’s Pass

I was visiting from out of state with my family, most of whom had never experienced something like this before, and we thought it would be a good idea - we're sure glad that we did! The experienced guides made sure that the whole day went smoothly, and luckily for us the weather was great. Highly recommended!
