Shark Cage Diving
Shark Diving in South Africa
Sharks have fascinated humans for centuries. You probably know of the tiger shark, Great White, whale shark, bull shark or mako or that the various species exist. A mere six hundred years ago, sharks were known only by the bizarre personas recounted by animated sailors. A shark, generally, was a shark. Several hundred years of research have allowed us to identify various species of these amazing fish . Our knowledge has only scratched the surface and there is still much we don’t understand. In South Africa there are many opportunities to meet different shark species. You can dive with tiger sharks at the Two Oceans Aquarium and off the KZN coast, view Great Whites and Bronze Whales from a cage or free dive offshore to see Mako and Blue sharks
Shark Cage Diving Gansbaai
Gansbaai is South Africa’s premier shark diving location. Only 170 km from Cape Town, the bay of KleinBaai was home to Great Whites that fed off the seals in Shark Alley - a gully between Dyer Island and Geyser Island. Dyer Island is the most southern island with African Penguins. In recent years due to climate change and over fishing the Great Whites seem to have moved east. The most common shark now seen is the Bronze whaler. This is still a great experience as normal 5-7 approach the cage at the same time. No diving experience is required and cruise to the dive site is only 20 minutes.
